Mass update for the recent inactivity
Builds, Mechanics October 3rd, 2008
Ok, long time no updates, took me a while to gather myself and write something, a lot has happened in past days, so this post is probably end as a quite long one.
All hail the Earthshatter
On saturday’s night I’ve finally dinged 40, and started to play with builds. I’ve went with the 14/0/11 route from my last post, and I’m very happy with it. The only thing I’m not actually using is Punishing Knock, I just feel that I’ve more than enough CC already and I’m often using Inspiring Attack just to buff my strength or my healer’s willpower, in such case having an inferior knockdown (which, as it turns out, is a stun and not a knockdown), which also apply 18 seconds immunity on my target making me unable to use Cave-In problematic in some cases, definitely good stuff if you are not that deep in Vengeance tho.
So, instead of that I’m loading Focused Offense on my bar, now many people will tell you how Focused Offense sucks and how you are not a tank when you are using it - they lie as they have no idea how meaningless armor can be in the endgame. From all destruction classes that deals physical damage: Black Orc will stack Wot Armors on you for -75% armor debuff (I know the math says 73%, but the tooltip of 5x stacked Wot Armor? actually shows 75%), chosen deals a lot of spiritual damage anyway, marauder can insta debuff 75% of your armor with Cutting Claw in savagery build or just ignore 50% of your armor with a tactic, Witch Elf doesn’t stay behind with armor removal either and Squig Herder has options to deal non-physical. It’s not like having less armor isn’t noticeable, but it’s not as bad as many people try to make it, what makes you a tank actually is your Toughness and Wounds above everything else (and shield block if you are running around with a shield).
The ability I was very positively surprised with is Earthshatter, going with the flow of Vengeance tree I was expecting this ability to apply a dot for the duration of the snare it applies, but as it turns out, it deals instant damage, and it’s a lot of damage, on 100 grudges it hits like a fucking truck, an aoe truck of doom:

The underlined damage is on a squishy after applying 100-grudge Stone Breaker and Taunt, probably some buffs from my group and/or debuffs on the target increasing damage as well, it’s usually under 1.5k mark for crits, and it crits not that often as I’m not using a single +crit tactic or ability atm, 1k non-crit hit is still quite a lot of burst damage anyway.
It’s also a good thing to notice that, while it’s an aoe ability, it actually (unlike Grip Of Stone) requires an offensive target in range, so you will never waste the cooldown into air - this is extremely sexy when chasing someone and spamming the button to get the snare from the range, much like piercing howl in WoW is used (PH doesn’t require a target, but it doesn’t have a cooldown either, so one can catch a target out of melee range with it).
Two-handed wielding tanks?
This is a very hot topic, as it has been since the release, there are countless topics about how two-handed tanks are viable, and just as many about how you have to use a shield to benefit your team in RvR. The truth lies in between, as two-handed wielding tanks are neither a true melee dps, nor are they a true hard-rock tank, but rather, as it’s often called - an offensive support.
I’m often actually playing the role of melee dps in scenarios, mostly assisting in melee trains (well, calling targets as I’m used to do that from WoW, but this time it’s not me who brings the mortal strike to the table), but I try to never loose an eye from my healer(s) and always keep the one I’m guarding in my defensive target so I see when he needs my help. There are times when all I do is staying at back near the healers to make sure that every Witch Elf trying to attack them ends watching the respawn timer, and this is something an offensive specced tank do really really well. 1h + shield tank can guard a healer just as well, but it will take him a while to kill any attackers, his best bet is to peel the attackers from the healers and wait for support to finish them off, offensive support is totally independent in this role, handling any ambush attempts on his own.
I’ve already had a good chance at doing pretty much everything with my Veng/Brotherhood hybrid, from T4 scenarios, to open RvR, to keep capture and defense, to PvE. In all aspects of the RvR I can always find myself very valuable, and in PvE when you have to tank, just grab a shield, switch the tactics and skill bars and you are ready to go, no respeccing required (same applies to tanking keep lords). Either way, having a shield in your backpack is a must, you never know when some big zerg fight starts (haven’t really seen them on live yet, but seen them a lot in last stage of Closed Beta), at which point not having Hold The Line when pushing is asking to be killed.
DAMN! Those Doombolts!
Well, not only Doombolts, but when wondering about what resists to pump up, your best shot is Corporeal and Spiritual, as those are the schools the glass canon of Destruction - Sorceress - use. Once they get to 100 dark magic (and they get pretty often in scenarios with healers at their back) they hurt a lot, and it makes it quite of a pain to do a melee push when facing multiple of them.
Stacking Corporeal and Spiritual resistances are your best bets for RvR as Order, and Dwarves have it pretty good, as we not only have a tactic for corporeal resistance (I don’t see anyone using it anytime soon), but also an ability to buff it on us and our oath friend - Stubborn As Stone - pretty cheap and has a quite nice haste effect for auto attack as well. I’m sitting at 49% corporeal resistance with this selfbuff, above that when buffed with Prismatic Shield by Archmage easily getting above 50%. Now resists are not granted, they can be debuffed just as armor can be, which makes stacking lots of them even more important, as having low amounts often counts for nothing (literally). Get the right gear and talismans, and you will see the results:

Eltharion queues, lags and poor GOA support
Eltharion is THE Open RvR server for Europe, which means it’s has HUGE population. In the primetime Destruction has to wait 2 hours to get in (if you have 5 hours of quality time to play after work, that means you are spending 40% of it just on waiting), and even Order gets to as high as 40 minutes queues. But that’s not what’s worse, it turns out the lag inside scenarios can really destroy a lot of fun from the game, when everything in open world zones works perfectly fine. Using some morale abilities is often virtually impossible - and I’m talking about self-castable stuff like Skin of Iron, where latency problems with target out of range are out of question, these are often life saving abilities, if you spend 10 seconds trying to activate a 5 second duration life saving ability, you end up dead. Fix this shit, seriously!
We had patch server unavailable for few hours, and there was no word from GOA at all, not even a simple confirmation “we know there is a problem and we are working on it”. Nope, nothing, the first information we got was from Mythic employee, seems like US is more concerned about European players, than European company running the game for us. It’s really sad that a company which can setup such a professional booth on Leipzig GC, is showing such a lack of customer support. Hopefully they will learn from their mistakes, but after years of running Dark Age of Camelot in Europe I guess we all expected something more.

Terhix, I know this is kinda off topic but have you played all the tank classes? I’m asking you this because I respect you as a warrior from WoW, that has the skills and a very in depth knowledge of the games you play (like me). I’m thinking of picking up the game, but don’t know which tank class to play. I’ve been reading that Borcs are not as good in open RvR endgame due to their design of focusing single targets, and I feel that a chosen is a little too defensive for my taste (I liked the offensiveness of the WoW warrior), and I also feel that the chosen looks a little boring to play. On the other hand from reading about the ironbreaker, they look pretty fun with alot of cool abilities.
October 3rd, 2008 at 9:50 am
Well, I havn’t played swordmaster or chosen, but I did quite some research about them, and I think I’ve a pretty good knowledge about all of the tanks in the game so far.
There is nothing wrong with Black Orc in open RvR, they got trainable AoE knockback now (something that was really missing in Closed Beta, and even then the class was pretty much fine) and are very durable as they usually have the most HP (even without the +wounds tactic) of all the tanks + self healing from da toughest is really really strong. And then, if you are bothered about utility and stuff like that for mass zerg open RvR, you can go path of da boss and get WAAAGH! - if you have sorcerers behind you an aoe attack that debuffs corporeal resistance is going to hurt Order A LOT.
Chosen is a very strong class on his own, but he doesn’t really have the “warrior” feeling build in, let’s leave that to emo 15 yo kids.

What about Grudge-Born Fury?
It seems very apailing so far on the paper with huge damage plus increased critical rate, but in “real” combat?
I’m taking about those 3sec of channeling needed to unleash the entire potential damage…
October 3rd, 2008 at 11:07 am
It’s quite similar to T’ree Hit Combo of Black Orc, and I didn’t really like that ability (edit: for the channeling part, no white hits while it), tho the dps is really really nice. The channeling is pretty much no-conditional from what I’ve seen so far, if you start attacking with it it will land even if the target gets out of range (actually I’ve been hit with T’ree Hit Combo by a dead Black Orc o_O). Going for earthshatter = no grudge-born fury, so it’s a no-go for me. On the other hand, grudge-born fury is a good dps tool at 0 grudge, earthshatter deals 0 damage at 0 grudge, so that makes you even more grudge dependant.
edit2: also remember that IB crits for only 150% damage, not 200%.
October 3rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Hmmm just looked at the numbers, even though they might be wrong.
On one hand Grudge-Born Fury costs 20AP/sec (so 60AP for 3sec), ends if I’m running out of AP, hits one target, does approx. 535 damage over those 3sec and adds up to 20% chances to crit (for 150% damage as you said). Cooldown 8sec.
On other hand, Earthshatter costs 35AP, does approx. up to 665 damage to anyone in a 30-feet area around me, plus it snares them. Cooldown 20sec.
Do the maths, Earthshatter is way far better than Grudge-Born Fury, even at 0 Grudge due to snare effect.
Well, thank for showing me the light!
BTW, your IB looks damn great!!!

Hi Terhix.
First, let me say that your blackorc video and posts where what got me decided on one for an offensive tank. So far I have gotten him to 21, but im starting to be a bit disapointed in him. The Chosen doesnt realy seem to be a good alternative, albeit they does look more efficient for the job (Itemization sorta proves this also, there are tons of 2h weapons for Chosen, but they are alot harder to come by as an Orc).
My question is this: How do you rate the Black Orc compared to the other tanks when played offensively? if its not too much trouble, then an explanation would be good. feel free to compare it to Order tanks aswell.
Thanks for being an inspiration in my character choice, and in advance for your reply.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
I can explain it for you
BO gets +50% crit damage, up to 200% crit dmg total. most in game
then they get bonus crit chance along with no plan -> good plan -> best plan
spam buttons -> profit
October 6th, 2008 at 12:43 am
Aye, and as the only tank in the game (the only class in the game?) they get immunity to detaunts, which greatly helps on dpsing squishies as you will be detaunted, -50% damage is rough deal.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
WoOosh BO seems really impressive on the damage side.
So, IB has tons of CC and BO has damage (plus some CC)… I guess it’s a tie or so.
Anyway, we can’t compare one Tank with an another one, Mythic said there is no one by one classe balancing, but an overall faction balancing.
So… wait and see
October 6th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
How much Strength / Wounds / Toughness do you have at 40.? Have you tried stacking strength in RvR, or is the loss to toughness too much?
October 7th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Unbuffed: 377/444/848 str/toughness/wounds. I’m not stacking strength, I’m a tank, even with two-hander, and even with that little str (mdps can get as high as 700 or 800) I can still top damage charts.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:52 am
Thanks. That is good to know.
October 7th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Yo Terhix, i see you went for the build i go as well. About Grudge-Born-Fury - its a total waste i did many tests with notes and different setups and 3sec of GBF is around 7-10% stronger than 2x Heavy Blow, yet you get auto attack with HB which is important once u get haste from stubbor as stone so no wonder no1 takes that ability as it sucks and you still can get tactic to reduce cost on HB by like 40% [15 ap].
Anyway glad to see you like IB and Earthshatter is indeed gr8. Tho it seems youve got rather small STR, i stack STR/T/W but i count it like every STR 1 pt = 1,40 T = 1,25 and W = 1 so when i want to be somewhat more dps as a tank but not gimped i am counting stats on egar using above method, every resistance is like 0,15 and armor is 0,1 per point.
Anyway IB is ftw, also try using binding grudge taunt and ofc punishing blow [dmg per half sec when moving] its really a pain for healers running away from you
About tanks
BO - crit big numbers tank very weak dot
IB- good crits and good dots
SM very weak crits million of strong dots
Chosen - who the hell knows :>
October 7th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Forgot to add when i was lvl32 i used standard +15% str aside of other buffs + inspiring attack and STR gear, i hit 740 STR and i can tell you dmg was SICK
October 7th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I had about 450 str at 40 unbuffed, but since we started doing PQs and Keeps I got some new gear, some of it has like 8 strength but a lot of tough/wounds, some has 0 but is epic, and as such I wear it anyway just to showoff how awesome I am, WTB better itemization!
October 9th, 2008 at 9:00 am
i see you got Ironmantle of the Blood Verdict [looks] and i wonder where did you get it? I got blood verdict chest and 1h axe but didnt find shoulders nor anything else. Also - where does the Fury’s Klad drop ?
October 9th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Those are blue shoulders actually, blood verdict ones drops in chapter 21 empire PQ called madness if I remember it right (the PQ where you go through portal after each stage), Masakari got them :P.
Edit: and I’ve no idea where Fury’s Klad drops (would like to know :P), wearing Blood Verdict’s one, weapon skill ftl tho :(.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
I see thanks for info :). Guess ill have to come there today and put my hands on them. YDay in Empire Ch20 i lost massive loot bag rol to guildie, he had 1276 i had 1275 :S my contribution was 350 hes 500, no inbetweens.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Yea, PQ rolls make people furious in organized guild PQ farming / keep siege, no option to pass bags to guildies or anything like that.
October 9th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
:< it doesnt drop from altar of madness, been there and got epic belt [3 epics now]
October 9th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Not altar of madness, just “madness”. Altar is chapter 22, right? Madness is same area as sea of sirens or whatever it’s called.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
:O, so its chapter 21? oh damn u said Ch21 i did 22 xD, well, belt drops in 22 and is nice time to go for 4th piece heh
October 11th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
workin alot lately, terhix ^_^?
October 12th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Some afterwork activites like gokarts and university at weekend, didn’t even have time to play WAR.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:18 am
Abandon all hope :)?
October 21st, 2008 at 11:31 pm
@Terhix
Somewhere in one of your comments you mentioned you play on an “Open RvR” server. I just loaded up WAR this week and started an IB on Brettonia which is a “Core” server. Will I regret this?
I alwasy played on a PvP server in WoW (Dunemaul), but all that amounted to was some occasional ganking. Is there more to it in WAR?
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:53 am
Bah Terhix…you given WAR up?
October 24th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Hey Terhix,
give your Fans some new coverage, please
Especially about your specc… still going 14/0/11 or 15/0/10? I´m speccing the second alternative at the moment, because of t the brotherhood tactics/cavein-problem. Any opinion about speccing the strengh/crit for 10 seconds or just putting the point into the tree for more base damage?
Greetings
Thor
October 28th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
My bet is he has realised that WAR will never beat WoW and has returned home:)
October 29th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Nah, I just feel too burned out atm to play any MMO.
November 10th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Terhix, I felt the same after switching from WoW to WAR. Just come back to WoW and you’re gonna feel fine again
November 11th, 2008 at 11:46 am
WoW PvP as of BC = crap.
After playing 10000 arenas, and getting 3 warriors to gladiator rank, I can tell you it’s shit. The biggest thing I hated, was the fact that arena was becomming more and more comp based, less skill based, and very rng based.
Fucking weaksauce favoring noobs that play fotm comps.
had to rant, /rant off.
I loved wow, just hate the path they chose to follow with its pvp system.
November 16th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Well, ofcourse it is comp based, but the biggest fun is to play in understimaded setup. Like 2 warriors (got to rating 1800 only ;/), warr+shaman and so!
November 24th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Terhix, come back. We beg you
November 29th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
yah, you don’t nessisary need to talk about MMO’s, you can just generally blog about shit
December 1st, 2008 at 11:50 pm
I think we can all safely say this is a dead-end game. High end game = skill less zerg. Might as well start blogging about Wrath and warriors again, man it rules.
