Speccing for a tough motherfucker
Builds September 12th, 2008WoW wasn’t the first game where tanks used to spec offensively to be PvP viable, WAR has gone away from this model, and while dps-specced tanks are quite viable, there is the other path to be a superior PvP machine. To accomplish this thing, you need to be able to deliver some serious pain in the ass while having insane survivability, and luckily enough, a Black Orc can have both!
Our best friend here is a shield, which provides block rating allowing to block all incoming damage and effects from any source (as long as it’s not a morale ability or another undefendable attack). But while a shield is nice and all, it’s not enough alone, we need to stack a bit of block chance %. Our options are: Good Wif Shield - core tactic gained at rank 27, Less Stabbin’ Me - available with 4 points into path of Da Toughest, if you reach high (70+) renown rank it’s possible to get 12% block chance from that as well. The biggest source of shield block however is Can’t Hit Me! - deep Da Toughest channeled ability. Combining all of the above can give us some pretty sick +block% values, that’s A LOT of avoidance. And what to do with all of that? Well, for example you can use Youz see me blok’ dat’?! to boost morale gain by a quite big margin, and exploit some defensive morale to the fullest, but be careful kids, there are only 4 tactic slots!
Shield block is not the only survivability tool there is, but let’s leave it there. Let’s take a look at the second part of being a tough motherfucker, which is being a motherfucker. One of the most annoying things you can do in RvR are knockbacks. And what’s more annoying than a knockback? An AoE knockback! That’s brawling spec ability, but it’s a core ability, and we are not interested in it’s damage here, so it’s fine and dandy to use it with another spec. Two other things that are worth to notice is the cooldown increase on Not in da face! and from offspeccing path of Da Boss we get Big Brawlin’ which gives us effecitve aoe snare and disorient on Big Swing, now we are talking! There is more good stuff to be taken, and with additional 4 mastery points from renown it only gets better.

Ever considering going all the way to Rock ‘Ard for a defensive build? 400 damage absorbed / 10 seconds is very nice.

Yeah, but it requires quite some points which would hinder my ability/tactics choice in Da Toughest if I want to keep Can’t Hit Me. Another thing is - it’s 2nd step builder in combo, and for second step builder I’m most likely going to spam big swing here, for the snare.

Mhm. When I do RvR scenarios however, I usually get more than enough attention running to the front lines and don’t need to worry about CCing people. More survivability is usually the better option when I play.
You getting lonely Terhix? Got to advertise the blog a bit more.

Can’t hit me is great for survivability, going to exploit it to the fullest when tanking zergs :P.
As far as advertising the blog goes, I’ve over 200 visits per day atm, just a lot of lurkers and not that many people who like to comments stuff it seems.

Hi Terhix,

The release date is on September 15th, right?
[I know its an odd question, but WoW:Wotlk release date was changed so many fckin times, that i lost my faith in "official notes"]

*lurk, lurk*… fuck, I’ve been uncovered!
um… you’re not going for the Can’t Touch Us? (btw, is there a way I can link those abilities like you do?)
I’m going for choppa + board with Good Wif Shield and Less Stabin’ Me for increased Block Chance (after all, block is uber in this game =) ) and Youz’ see me blok’ dat’? for Moral Increase in hope to be able to use Can’t Touch Us more often.
I am very undecided about going for Dat Was Great! or You Got Nuffin’ as last tactic. Both seem to me really worth it, the first to kill hard targets and the last to kill dds in general. But I guess I’ll stick to the first one since it’s a debuff which gives an advantage to everyone and since I’m going for da Toughest I’m not the damage dealer in our group. Therefore, I’ll seldomly be the target of detaunts I guess (not with a Destruction Sorc in my group).

@WillBeGiant: Release date is 18th, 15th is when the headstart begins for standard edition.
@zaha: nah, Immaculate Defense (http://www.wardb.com/spell.aspx?id=613) is pretty good alone, no need to get another defensive rank 4 morale imo. Also, I’d get You Got Nuffin’ for any dps build, but this is not one of them :P.

I’ll go Da’ Toughest all the way, want to try out Cant’ Touch Us. As you can respecc at any time, its safe to test stuff. Probably investing the rest of the points to take You Got Nuffin’ (everything else is out of reach when i take the abilities i want and specialize in DT).
@zaha

About WARDB tooltips: despite what they say on the website, you should always attach javascript at the end of the page before closing body tag, that way the site loads quicker.

Just an apology if you weren’t looking for much traffic, I got linked this site and it made planning out my attempted-cookie-cutter-spec and my defensive-RvR-spec alot easier. I linked this on WHA and people seem to appreciate it.
Props though if this propels you to Blorc stardom, it’s a pleasure of a site to read.

Hi,
in my opinion, Less Stabbin Me isn’t that good. Because your always cycling throught the plans and the benefit changes from 0% bonus to 10% much to often. And there are also more viable tactics.

@Bevd: thanks a lot.
@yukimura: I read a lot of blogs that I never bother to comment myself, I know the feeling, don’t worry :P.
@Samurro: that’s something I’ve to test, but increasing my melee avoidance from ~30% to ~50% in best plan doesn’t seem like a bad thing at all (it’s 10% block AND 10% parry).

Would be very interested about the usefulness of Less Stabbin’ Me myself. Actually, I was wondering about it’s effectiveness too…
